BMW 5 Series 7 Pin Electrics (10-16)

7 Pin Kits

The socket has 7 pins, hence the name, if you are towing a trailer, cycle carrier or towing counterpart that needs power to lighting functions only, you will need a universal or dedicated 7 pin (12N) electrics kit.

Vehicle Specific Kits vs Universal Kits

The most obvious difference between a vehicle specific or dedicated wiring kit and a universal wiring kit is price with universal kits being cheaper in most cases.

We recommend dedicated electrics for any vehicle still under warranty as fitting universal wiring kits that do not specifically correspond with the vehicles electrical and wiring system will invalidate your manufacturer's warranty.

In most modern vehicles, a bypass relay s required when fitting universal kits to coordinate power between the vehicle and towing counterpart - we include a bypass in your kit for any vehicles that need it.

In some cases where a 7 pin dedicated kit isn't available for your car, we will provide you with an adapter so you can carry on using your trailer, cycle carrier or caravan.

Technical Key Words

We know that wiring kits can be confusing, and sometimes we use technical phrases and abbriviations that you may or may not understand. Here's our quick Technical Key Word Guide:

TP

TP or Trailer Preparation (also known as "Towing Preparation" or "Prepared Connector") just means that when your car was being made, the manufacturer added a special wiring connector specifically for towing - it is located at the rear of your car making it easier to fit the wiring kit. If you don't know if your car has TP or not, you will need to contact the car manufacturer.

Bypass

Only used on universal kits, a bypass is a box that allows the wiring to bypass the vehciles faults system when you install and cut the wiring loom on vehicles with CANBUS systems. We have included a bypass in your kit if your car requires it - make sure you buy the right year towbar to ensure you are getting the right universal electrics kit.

A very well designed and manufactured product. Fitting the kit myself with the vehicle specific wiring loom I would recommend to anyone not to try and save a few pounds on the universal loom and unless well versed in car mechanics and wiring...pay for installation (I've wired up cars before from scratch and found this a challenge)

Great product that fits perfectly. The instructions are all in pictorial format which I found to be not as clear as I would have liked, but ultimately it was relatively easy to follow and the bar was fitted within an hour.
The wiring loom was a bit more complex, even though there is only a small number of connections to make. A phone call to the technical help line solved the problem for me and it all worked flawlessly first time.
I have now towed the caravan and have had no problems at all. Having seen and felt how robust the towbar is, I have every confidence in it's ability to cope with pulling my caravan and anything else that falls within the weight range of my car.

Product is great quality but some better instructions could have saved me a few hours of faffing around with the westfalia electrics.

The towbar itself was easy to fit.

Advice to others: on my Right hand drive 2011 F11 the control module to connect CAN, switched 12v and brake light to is on the driver’s side behind the bonnet release. Also the connectors are swapped, so look in the opposite connector to what is in the westfalia instructions (both have a gr/wh wire in them, but the ‘other’ is not switched +12v). Also the CAN bus can be found on multiple modules already in the boot area, as can the 3rd brake light wire (on the loom in the right hand side wiring area, in the top left corner, going up), and the permant live can be taken from the battery bus bar without having to go to the engine bay.

Good product and can be fitted by non professionals.

Instructions would benefit from having some wording instead of just pictures.
Also would be better if there was a version of it for RHD cars saving me the need to strip trim on both sides to find the correct control units.

Quality product that shows no visible sign on car when not in use. Takes a few goes to master insertion and removal but then it’s a breeze. Could do with being supplied in a storage case for times when not in use.

Quality product, quick to fit and remove, works perfect with dedicated wiring, parking sensor works fine even when tow bar left fitted, electrics fold away out of sight and when plugged in reverse parking sensors disabled automatically with screen just showing a tow bar. Perfect choice for my BMW.

Hi.I have bmw f10 525d 2011 saloon M sport.I want to fit westfalia detachable towbar.Is in m sport version bumper cut visible?How much is the fitting this towbar at my home or in towbar fitting station close to xxxxxx? Regards Sebastian

Hello Sebastian, There is a lower lip on the very bottom of the bumper which already has cut outs. If you are very careful you can just elongate one of the existing cut-outs and this will not be visible. The detachable Westfalia towbar fitted with 7 pin dedicated electrics at your home or place of work would be £469 including VAT, £532 if 13 pin dedicated, £397 if 7 pin universal, £447 if 13 pin universal.
