BMW 5 Series 7 Pin Electrics (10-16)

7 Pin Kits

The socket has 7 pins, hence the name, if you are towing a trailer, cycle carrier or towing counterpart that needs power to lighting functions only, you will need a universal or dedicated 7 pin (12N) electrics kit.

Vehicle Specific Kits vs Universal Kits

The most obvious difference between a vehicle specific or dedicated wiring kit and a universal wiring kit is price with universal kits being cheaper in most cases.

We recommend dedicated electrics for any vehicle still under warranty as fitting universal wiring kits that do not specifically correspond with the vehicles electrical and wiring system will invalidate your manufacturer's warranty.

In most modern vehicles, a bypass relay s required when fitting universal kits to coordinate power between the vehicle and towing counterpart - we include a bypass in your kit for any vehicles that need it.

In some cases where a 7 pin dedicated kit isn't available for your car, we will provide you with an adapter so you can carry on using your trailer, cycle carrier or caravan.

Technical Key Words

We know that wiring kits can be confusing, and sometimes we use technical phrases and abbriviations that you may or may not understand. Here's our quick Technical Key Word Guide:

TP

TP or Trailer Preparation (also known as "Towing Preparation" or "Prepared Connector") just means that when your car was being made, the manufacturer added a special wiring connector specifically for towing - it is located at the rear of your car making it easier to fit the wiring kit. If you don't know if your car has TP or not, you will need to contact the car manufacturer.

Bypass

Only used on universal kits, a bypass is a box that allows the wiring to bypass the vehciles faults system when you install and cut the wiring loom on vehicles with CANBUS systems. We have included a bypass in your kit if your car requires it - make sure you buy the right year towbar to ensure you are getting the right universal electrics kit.

Wouldn't fit another type of bar to my car. The quality of the product is second to none. Fitting was easy, but as I said in my other review, you have to be a bit brave when pulling off the bumper. Due to mine being an M sport, a slightly bigger cut was needed in the bumper, and I had to switch the bracket for the electrics around so that the plug sat further back towards the car so I didn't have to cut the area of the bumper making it visible. Although the original description says that the cut is not visible, there is a little caveat saying that on M sports it is.. but by doing what I did, you cant see the hole unless you get under the car.

I can't imagine there is a better quality towbar out there for my car.

The fitting instructions take a little concentration to understand the pictures (there is no text) but once you get the hang of it fitting is a breeze. The dedicated wiring harness, again took some concentration, and as mine is a RHD vehicle the wiring pictogram for the footwell module is switched around and it took me a while to figure this out and then to find the right wires to tap into.

Once all fitted, the bar is out of sight so it isn't obvious that you have a towbar until you attach the detachable swan neck. This is an easy task, just pull and turn the lock/unlock knob on the side of the detached swan neck after which installation is a one hand effort to plug into its receptacle with no crawling under the car needed.

Westfalia needs to update the instructions to make the wiring more obvious but the final result is top notch. I'm very happy with the quality of the towbar, the dedicated wiring harness and the overall installation.

Best price on the net and also cheap delivery to N.Ireland. Did not cash in on extra delivery cost like other Mainland UK sellers. Also provided some support over the phone regarding the wiring which was helpful.
