Audi A3 7 Pin Electrics (12-16)

7 Pin Kits

The socket has 7 pins, hence the name, if you are towing a trailer, cycle carrier or towing counterpart that needs power to lighting functions only, you will need a universal or dedicated 7 pin (12N) electrics kit.

Vehicle Specific Kits vs Universal Kits

The most obvious difference between a vehicle specific or dedicated wiring kit and a universal wiring kit is price with universal kits being cheaper in most cases.

We recommend dedicated electrics for any vehicle still under warranty as fitting universal wiring kits that do not specifically correspond with the vehicles electrical and wiring system will invalidate your manufacturer's warranty.

In most modern vehicles, a bypass relay s required when fitting universal kits to coordinate power between the vehicle and towing counterpart - we include a bypass in your kit for any vehicles that need it.

In some cases where a 7 pin dedicated kit isn't available for your car, we will provide you with an adapter so you can carry on using your trailer, cycle carrier or caravan.

Technical Key Words

We know that wiring kits can be confusing, and sometimes we use technical phrases and abbriviations that you may or may not understand. Here's our quick Technical Key Word Guide:

TP

TP or Trailer Preparation (also known as "Towing Preparation" or "Prepared Connector") just means that when your car was being made, the manufacturer added a special wiring connector specifically for towing - it is located at the rear of your car making it easier to fit the wiring kit. If you don't know if your car has TP or not, you will need to contact the car manufacturer.

Bypass

Only used on universal kits, a bypass is a box that allows the wiring to bypass the vehciles faults system when you install and cut the wiring loom on vehicles with CANBUS systems. We have included a bypass in your kit if your car requires it - make sure you buy the right year towbar to ensure you are getting the right universal electrics kit.

Hi, i got an Audi A3 sportback 2014 (5 dorr). And i want to buy the Westfalia towbar with item number: 317132. What do I need to order to get it complete. which Bypass? I need a 7 pin electrickit, but what.

Hi, I have just bought a 2013 Audi A3 Sline (3door) and will be looking to fitting a detachable towbar (probably a westfalia as these are the ones I have bought from you for my last 2,cars) Can you please advise what electrics I would require? I have had a look online and am rather confused regarding what are the risks of having a non dedicated electrics and whether I would need any programming of the car after installing? My use of the towbar is for towing a jetski therfore I only need to have a basic 7pin socket for the trailerboard. Could you also give me a quote on fitting either at your depot or in Denbigh, North Wales? Thanks for your help, Rhodri

Hi Rhodri There is universal wiring which is the cheapest, needs to be spliced into the vehicles wiring but perfectly safe or you could go for dedicated wiring which is a kit made for the vehicle (like the genuine kit) so it mostly plugs straight in and will enable any settings the vehicle has for example switch off parking sensors or activate trailer stability (Recommended for cars under warranty). Yes the dedicated kit needs coding to the vehicle. Is it the upto 2013 shape or the 2013 onwards shape? Kind regards

Hi Rhodri, Quotation for supply and fitting a Westfalia detachable towbar, with 7 pin universal electrics fitted at your home or place of work £368.00 inc VAT Quotation for supply and fitting a Westfalia detachable towbar, with 7 pin dedicated electrics fitted at your home or place of work £540.85 inc VAT and the software download for the wiring to work http://www.pfjones.co.uk/audi-a3-2012-on-westfalia-detachable-tow-bar-305405.html Just to confuse you a bit more there are 2 types of wiring kits depending on the vehicle having trailer preparation or not, which means if it has prep some of the wiring would have been done at the factory and run upto the back of the vehicle to allow a much shorter and cheaper wiring kit to plug in. If it has no prep then the wiring kit is longer and needs running upto the front of the vehicle and costs more. The dealers would be able to tell you if you have trailer preparation from your registration number. I have quoted on the without prep wiring so if it has prep you can knock off about £40 from the dedicated price. Also with the detachable towbar you would need to get a lower bumper spoiler from the dealers to cover the hole when detached, our fitter would put this on at the same time. Thanks Adam that is really helpful. I will make some enquiries with the dealer to get a price for the lower trim and to confirm that it is compatible with the s line model.
