Coding is required to tell the vehicles ECU that a towbar is present so the towing electrics will function properly. This is done with a diagnostic tool, and may need to be done by the main dealers.

Many modern vehicles require a bypass relay for the towbar electrics to work correctly. If your vehicle requires this relay then damage can occur to the cars electrics if one isn't fitted.

Hi,
I have a VW Passat Estate (2011) AF61XGJ.
I would like to buy the swan neck Witter towbar with the dedicated electronics '7 pin version'. I want to know that's the difference between the two options you have there and which I should order. However will you help me with the location of the plug where it should be connected? which side of the vehicle. I am a car mechanic and I have obd2 interfaces to access the car ecu. Would it be possible to activate the electronics with an autocom or a delphi interface?
Thanks for your help,
Ben
The 2 options for electrics are universal and dedicated, universal electrics are made for any vehicle and a crimped into your vehicles wiring, and dedicated electrics are vehicle specific and are a mostly plug in kit. All wiring kits come with fitting instructions and they are also available on the wiring kits main page. You only need dealer coding when you use dedicated wiring and it is only on certain manufacturers. The coding machines we use are VAGCOM, Autocode and Autologic, we don't know if the ones you have are capable of coding or not sorry.
