7 Pin Kits

The socket has 7 pins, hence the name, if you are towing a trailer, cycle carrier or towing counterpart that needs power to lighting functions only, you will need a universal or dedicated 7 pin (12N) electrics kit.

Twin Pin Kits

Twin electrics is a 2 plug system which combines the single 7 pin 12N electrics socket with a 12S electrics socket. You will need twin electrics if you require more power than what a single 7 pin socket can provide on a pre 2008 manufactured UK caravan (post 2008 UK caravans are fitted with 13 pin connectors). The twin electrics will power everything that a single electrics system powers plus reversing lamp, battery, power supply and fridge.

13 Pin Kits

If you are towing a modern caravan made after 2008 that needs power to lighting functions and the onboard leisure battery you will need a universal or dedicated 13 pin electrics kit.

Vehicle Specific Kits vs Universal Kits

The most obvious difference between a vehicle specific or dedicated wiring kit and a universal wiring kit is price with universal kits being cheaper in most cases.

We recommend dedicated electrics for any vehicle still under warranty as fitting universal wiring kits that do not specifically correspond with the vehicles electrical and wiring system will invalidate your manufacturer's warranty.

In most modern vehicles, a bypass relay s required when fitting universal kits to coordinate power between the vehicle and towing counterpart - we include a bypass in your kit for any vehicles that need it.

In some cases an extension kit is required, we have included this in your kit so there is no need to worry!

Technical Key Words

We know that wiring kits can be confusing, and sometimes we use technical phrases and abbriviations that you may or may not understand. Here's our quick Technical Key Word Guide:

TP

TP or Trailer Preparation (also known as "Towing Preparation" or "Prepared Connector") just means that when your car was being made, the manufacturer added a special wiring connector specifically for towing - it is located at the rear of your car making it easier to fit the wiring kit. If you don't know if your car has TP or not, you will need to contact the car manufacturer.

Bypass

Only used on universal kits, a bypass is a box that allows the wiring to bypass the vehciles faults system when you install and cut the wiring loom on vehicles with CANBUS systems. We have included a bypass in your kit if your car requires it - make sure you buy the right year towbar to ensure you are getting the right universal electrics kit.
