7 Pin Kits

The socket has 7 pins, hence the name, if you are towing a trailer, cycle carrier or towing counterpart that needs power to lighting functions only, you will need a universal or dedicated 7 pin (12N) electrics kit.

Vehicle Specific Kits vs Universal Kits

The most obvious difference between a vehicle specific or dedicated wiring kit and a universal wiring kit is price with universal kits being cheaper in most cases.

We recommend dedicated electrics for any vehicle still under warranty as fitting universal wiring kits that do not specifically correspond with the vehicles electrical and wiring system will invalidate your manufacturer's warranty.

In most modern vehicles, a bypass relay s required when fitting universal kits to coordinate power between the vehicle and towing counterpart - we include a bypass in your kit for any vehicles that need it.

In some cases where a 7 pin dedicated kit isn't available for your car, we will provide you with an adapter so you can carry on using your trailer, cycle carrier or caravan.

Technical Key Words

We know that wiring kits can be confusing, and sometimes we use technical phrases and abbriviations that you may or may not understand. Here's our quick Technical Key Word Guide:

TP

TP or Trailer Preparation (also known as "Towing Preparation" or "Prepared Connector") just means that when your car was being made, the manufacturer added a special wiring connector specifically for towing - it is located at the rear of your car making it easier to fit the wiring kit. If you don't know if your car has TP or not, you will need to contact the car manufacturer.

Bypass

Only used on universal kits, a bypass is a box that allows the wiring to bypass the vehciles faults system when you install and cut the wiring loom on vehicles with CANBUS systems. We have included a bypass in your kit if your car requires it - make sure you buy the right year towbar to ensure you are getting the right universal electrics kit.

Fitted for a bike rack and works well, completely hidden when not in use. Fitting instructions for it and the wiring kit need a bit of studying but relatively straightforward.

Maybe an installation problem but the control box intermittently buzzes when the indicators are on even with no trailer. With trailer attached right indicator is fine but left one cause both to flash.

Installation instructions for tow bar excellent with no issues- wiring kit fairly straightforward but the instructions around fog light and turning off rear parking sensors vague when there are a multitude of coloured wires and some very similar coloured wires- really needed a colour photo or detailed sketch of the actual wiring. Also annoyed with myself for even bothering with the fog light as there is no fog light on my tail board- this could have been a note on the instructions. Being very picky here as the product, delivery and price excellent. The tow bar insulation is invisible unless you are in the know!
