Coding is required to tell the vehicles ECU that a towbar is present so the towing electrics will function properly. This is done with a diagnostic tool, and may need to be done by the main dealers.

The installation was very simple, the instructions were well presented and easy to follow. The dedicated wiring loom from PF Jones, just plugged in and worked out of the box, well worth the extra cash to not has to faff of cutting and stripping wires. The only issue, is the reversing sensors do not disable with out coded by the dealer. This was a known limitation and I was happy to accept this, as I can disable the sensors in the car when I select reserve. I have not done much towing with it yet, so I cannot really comment on that side.

Write out the box the locking mechanism wouldn’t work. Had to be returned for testing. Witter tech helpline and pfjones unable to sort out on the phone. I now need to wait on it being returned, testing and solution.

I normally only buy the OEM towbars as they are a guaranteed fit but this towbar is extremely well made and an excellent design.
I would have no hesitation in buying Witter again, it doesn't even set off my rear parking sensors when in reverse (No ECU connected).
If I had to find something to criticises the plastic blanking cap for plugging the gap when the tow hitch is removed could be better.

The access to fitting instructions on line is the reason I choose pf Jones for my tow bars and why I keep coming back. I also like the availability of fitted towbar pictures when these are available. Perhaps you could ask satisfied customers to send back a picture of the final result and you could then have pictures for all the towbars you supply. I would certainly be happy to share a picture of how well my new Witter detachable bar suits my Freelender.

Arranged fitting of tow bar and electrics, fitter turned up on time, fitted in a couple of hours and gave a full demonstration of detachable, stress free transaction will use again.
Hi. I am thinking of purchasing the Witter R41AQ detachable towbar with the landrover dedicated (13 pin) electrics to fit to a Landrover Freelander 2014 model but I am told that I will have to have a Landrover dealership to do a software update beforehand so that the electrics work. I recall that there was a similar issue when the same towbar and electrics was fitted to my current Freelander (2010 model) but in the end the problem did not exist as the update had been done I think which was confirmed by yourselves in a telephone conversation on the day of the fit. Accordingly, before I take delivery of the new car can you confirm that I will have to ensure that the dealership does the update beforehand. Also, I am advised that the type of Landrover dedicated electrics provided depends somehow on the chassis or is it the VIN number. Is the latter true? Many thanks for your asistance in answering these two questions. Kind regards. John

Hello Mr Dover,
Freelanders built between 09/2006 and 09/2012 needed to be coded. Vehicles built 10/2012 to 01/2015 didn't need coding.
The exact change was when chassis numbers changed from 7H.......... to DH................
So you wont need to bother about coding on a 2014 vehicle.
Thank you
Hi Phil / Chris. Further to our previous regarding the content of the exchange of emails below I should be grateful if you would provide me with your views as regards the Land Rover dealership I bought the 2014 Freelander Metropolis from saying that I will still need the diagnostic machine to tell the car it has tow bar and electrics on the back end, i.e. it needs to be coded. This is at odds with your previous advise in this regard but I presume Land Rover is incorrect as you are the experts in this field. You will note that the chassis number associated with my car has FH within it rather than DH but I presume this makes no difference because from 2012 coding is not require. Also, if coding is necessary for whatever reason then can it be done retrospectively. The car has a reversing camera. Does this make a difference? Thanks again. John.

Hello Mr Dover,
Sorry it took a while to reply. I spoke to Right Connections who make the wiring kits. They say their kits do not require coding, but other manufacturers (including Land Rover ) kits may well require coding.
Reverse cameras are a bit of an odd thing. Most vehicles turn them off if reversing whilst towing, but some people were requesting they stay on. If you have a vehicle that does it one way, and you want it to do the opposite, coding would be required.
Thank you
Hi Phil. Thanks very much for your very informative response. An excellent service which I cannot fault. Thanks again. John.

Will the Witter detachable towbar code R41AQ fit a Landrover Freelander 2 Dynamic (2014) with no bumper cuts. The Dynamic has a body styling kit fitted which modifies the rear bumper. My current car is a 2010 Freelander 2 LE Sports which also has the body styling kit and no bumper cuts were involved when this towbar was fitted to the car. The reason I ask is that I am thinking of buying a Dynamic and just wanted reassurance that the same applies. Many thanks.
Asked by John Dover | 01/03/2016, 09:37 | 1 answer(s)
Hi John,
I have spoken with Witter and they have said that they believe the Dynamic model is still fine using this bar and would have no bumper cut.
Kind Regards.
For DIY fitting of this towbar, will the rear bumper need to be removed

Hi Richard
please have a look this link for the fitting instructions ( no bumper removal required )

bought this tow bar off you 6 to 7 years ago.Due to some caravans having larger wheels fitted my van is excessive nose down,do you sell detachable bars which raise the ball hieght which fit this socked or any modification.
Asked by les kenworthy | 18/08/2015, 19:24 | 1 answer(s)
Hi Les, unfortunately there is no way of raising the height on this towbar, even if you were to buy another Witter detachable neck which is higher then it would make the towbar not type approved and nobody could tell how safe it would be.
Kind regards

1. Do the vehicle specific electrics (Freelander 2 - registered Jan 2012) just plug in to existing vehicle wiring harness?
