Coding is required to tell the vehicles ECU that a towbar is present so the towing electrics will function properly. This is done with a diagnostic tool, and may need to be done by the main dealers.

Many modern vehicles require a bypass relay for the towbar electrics to work correctly. If your vehicle requires this relay then damage can occur to the cars electrics if one isn't fitted.

Hi, do you know if there is a detachable tow bar available for a 2016 Ford Focus ST (with centre exhaust outlet)?
Asked by Paul Broadbent | 20/06/2016, 14:17 | 1 answer(s)
Hi Paul, I'm afraid you will not find one, not only because the exhaust is in the way but the vehicle is not homologated to tow at all (Illegal to tow) Thanks.
I am looking to buy a towbar for a Ford Focus Hatchback (2013) in order to tow a trailer. Is it best to get dedicated electric kits or universal? The trailer itself already has electrics connected
Hi Alison
7pin universal will fit any vehicle
With the dedicated electrics you would have to call the dealer and check if your vehicle was built with trailer preparation as this is something i couldn't tell you
Kind regards
I have a May 2015 Ford Focus zetec 1.5 TDCI S 5 door hatchback registration number HN15 SVY. It is the 120 PS model.
It doesn't have a central diffuser under the middle of the rear bumper. It has a flat bottom edge. (can send a photo if needed).
I want a vertical detachable tow bar such as a bosal one.
I have looked at the fitting instructions for the bosal and the car does have the underside cover panel that it shows.
I'm concerned as my car is a zetec S model and some detail a different towbar for a zebec S but show a different bumper profile.
Can you advise on which one I need please?

Hi Roger,
Can you get me a picture of the back of your vehicle, there was a facelift and I can advise you better if I know which one it is.
Thanks.
Hi Roger,
Yes the Bosal towbar should be fine: http://www.pfjones.co.uk/ford-focus-hatchback-2011-onwards-bosal-detachable-towbar.html
Do you need any electrics? Or a fitting price?
Thanks.
Yes, I need electrics. Only single electrics for a thule cycle rack and a camping trailer. (7 pin plugs).
Looking at the site it mentions a ford specific plug in set of electrics and I'm not against this. In the past I've used a 7 way bypass, would that not work?
I see the need for a visit to ford to plug it in to tell the car eco about towing… would that be needed with a bypass fitment?
Regards,
Roger Orchard
Hi Roger,
You can use universal electrics with a bypass but we don't recommend it, you can have warranty issues with putting universal electrics on new vehicles as they class it as cutting into the vehicle wiring.
I recommend you go with the dedicated wiring kit, this is a mostly plug in kit and the vehicle will need coding. I say mostly plug in as it is a number of plugs in the vehicle, there is also two types of wiring and it depends on if your vehicle has trailer preparation on not.
Fitting instructions
With Prep: http://www.pfjones.co.uk/Wiring_instructions/307442300107-113.pdf
Without Prep: http://www.pfjones.co.uk/Wiring_instructions/19060527RC.pdf
As for the coding you don't have to go to Ford, you can go to any garage with the correct coding tool so I recommend you ring around to see.
For the Bosal detachable: http://www.pfjones.co.uk/ford-focus-hatchback-2011-onwards-bosal-detachable-towbar.html
With 7 pin dedicated electrics without trailer prep costs £310.49 including Vat.
With 7 pin dedicated electrics with trailer prep costs £252.94 including Vat.
With 7 pin universal electrics costs £178.58 including Vat.
Thanks.
Hi Roger,
Not really both looms are very similar but with an extra loom that extends to the front best way to find out is ring your dealer and ask them, they should have it on record.
Thanks.
