Volvo XC90 Towing Specifications

The Volvo XC90 is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars since 2002 and now in its second generation. We will cover the towing specifications of both generations below.

Volvo XC90 2015 Onwards Towbar electric kits

We recommend that all tow bars fitted to a Volvo XC90 2015 Onwards are fitted with a dedicated electrics kit, this not only helps to ensure all modern features, such as trailer stability, parking sensors function correctly, but also ensures that the vehicles manufacturer’s warranty is not invalidated. A quick look at Volvo's warranty page confirms that XC90's, produced in the last three years will have a manufacturers warranty active.

"For three years from the date that the vehicle is delivered to the first owner or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first, any component failure attributable to faulty materials or workmanship during manufacture will be rectified free of charge by an authorised Volvo dealer.

We do of course offer, Volvo XC90 2015 Onwards universal electrics kits, however as stated these will invalidate any manufacturer warranty you may have.

Bypass Relays

Volvo XC90 2015 Onwards will require a bypass relay when universal electrics are fitted. Bypass relays are used to ensure that the kit does not present faults on the dashboard. A bypass relay helps the universal kit hide from your vehicle ECU and functions so as not to put faults on the dashboard hence the name “BYPASS”. A dedicated system works in harmony with your vehicles ECU and all of its functions.

Coding

This is the coding of the ECU to accept the dedicated system, this updates your vehicle's software to run smoothly with the new towbar, it works very much like an update to your smartphone. All Volvo XC90 2015 Onwards do not require coding.

Bumper cuts

The only options on Volvo XC90 2015 Onwards towbars are Visible, and None Visible a bumper cut is required.

Nose weight

Nose weight is the amount of weight pushing down on the tow ball, it is important to not exceed the nose weight set on the tow bar, failure to do so could damage the car chassis and/or tow bar mounting points. For the Volvo XC90 2015 Onwards the nose weight is the same for all towbars. The maximum capacity nose weight is 140kg, nose weights are displayed under each tow bar below.

Towing weight

Towing weight is the weight that the Volvo XC90 2015 Onwards towbars can tow safely, without damaging the vehicle, the maximum towing weight capacity is 2700kg,

You will need to check the towing limit for your model of Volvo XC90 as it may not be able to tow up to the weight limit that the tow bar can tow.  

Volvo XC90 2003-2015
