Volvo V40 Towing Specifications

The Volvo V40 is a small premium hatchback that is praised for its safety, manufactured by Volvo Cars. It was revealed in 1996, that first model was produced until 2004, the early model was an estate car. In 2012 Volvo relaunched the V40 this time as a small premium hatchback in the same class as the Audi A3 and the BMW 1 Series.

We recommend that all tow bars fitted to a Volvo V40 2012 Onwards hatchbacks are fitted with a dedicated electrics kit, this not only helps to ensure all modern features, such as trailer stability, parking sensors function correctly, but also ensures that the vehicles manufacturer’s warranty is not invalidated. A quick look at Volvo's warranty page confirms that V40's produced from 2016 onwards, produced in the last three years will have a manufacturers warranty active.

"For three years from the date that the vehicle is delivered to the first owner or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first, any component failure attributable to faulty materials or workmanship during manufacture will be rectified free of charge by an authorised Volvo dealer.

We do of course offer, Volvo V40 2012 Onwards hatchbacks universal electrics kits, however as stated these will invalidate any manufacturer warranty you may have.

Bypass Relays

Volvo V40 2016 onwards hatchbacks will require a bypass relay when universal electrics are fitted. Bypass relays are used to ensure that the kit does not present faults on the dashboard.

A bypass relay helps the universal kit hide from your vehicle ECU and functions so as not to put faults on the dashboard hence the name “BYPASS”.

A dedicated system works in harmony with your vehicles ECU and all of its functions.

Coding

This is the coding of the ECU to accept the dedicated system, this updates your vehicle's software to run smoothly with the new towbar, it works very much like an update to your smartphone. All Volvo V40 2016 onwards hatchbacks do not require coding.

Bumper cuts

The options on Volvo V40 2016 onwards hatchback towbars are None Visible or Visible, a bumper cut is required.

Nose weight

Nose weight is the amount of weight pushing down on the tow ball, it is important to not exceed the nose weight set on the tow bar, failure to do so could damage the car chassis and/or tow bar mounting points. For the Volvo V40's 2016 onwards hatchbacks the maximum capacity nose weight is 75kg, nose weights are displayed under each tow bar below.

Towing weight

Towing weight is the weight that the Volvo V40 2016 Onwards Hatchback towbars can tow safely, without damaging the vehicle, the maximum towing weight capacity is 1500kg.

You will need to check the towing limit for your model of Volvo V40 as it may not be able to tow up to the weight limit that the tow bar can tow.
