Volkswagen Touran Towbars Towing Specifics

The Touran was first launched in 2003 is a compact MPV, based on a vertically stretched fifth generation Volkswagen Golf Mk5. When it comes to towing the Volkswagen Touran has a decent towing capacity.Currently the Volkswagen Touran has two generations, with the latest release being, released in the UK in 2015. We will be covering the towing specifics of all three generations below.

Volkswagen Touran 2003-2015

The first generation of Volkswagen Touran's was launched in 2003, if you have a 2015 Touran it is important you correctly determine which model you have to ensure you get the correct towbar. Volkswagen Touran 2003-2015 Towbar electric kits

We recommend that all tow bars fitted to a Volkswagen Touran 2003-2015 are fitted with a dedicated electrics kit, this not only helps to ensure all modern features, such as trailer stability, parking sensors function correctly, but also ensures that the vehicles manufacturer’s warranty is not invalidated. A quick look at Volkswagen's warranty page confirms that Tourans's produced between 2003 - 2015 will no longer have a manufacturers warranty active,

• A 2-year unlimited mileage manufacturers warranty.
• A further 1 year / 60,000 miles (whichever is soonest) warranty.

This means you're covered for a total of 3 years or up to 60,000 miles, whichever comes first Used cars purchased from Volkswagen come with 12 months warranty. Bypass Relays

All Volkswagen Touran 2003-2015 tow bars fits will require a bypass relay, if universal electrics are fitted, this is to ensure that it does not present faults on the dashboard. A bypass relay helps the universal kit hide from your vehicle ECU and functions so as not to out faults on the dashboard hence the name “BYPASS” A dedicated system works in harmony with your vehicles ECU and all of its functions.

Coding

This is the coding of the ECU to accept the dedicated system, this updates your vehicle's software to run smoothly with the new towbar, it works very much like an update to your smartphone. Volkswagen Touran's vehicles made between 2003-2015 will require coding.

Bumper cuts

The tow bar you select will determine whether the cut to the bumper is visible or none visible, for the Touran's for this year range a bumper cut is required.

Nose weight

Nose weight is the amount of weight pushing down on the tow ball, it is important to not exceed the nose weight set on the tow bar, failure to do so could damage the car chassis and/or tow bar mounting points. For the Volkswagen Touran's manufactured between the years 2003 to 2015 the nose weight is 75kg, nose weights are displayed under each tow bar below.

Towing weight

Towing weight is the weight that the Volkswagen Touran's 2003 – 2015 towbars can tow safely, without damaging the vehicle, the lowest towing weight capacity is 1500kg, the highest towing weight capacity is 1800kg, this is towbar specific, towing weights are displayed below each towbar below. (towing weights are bar specific)

You will need to check the towing limit for your model of Touran as it may not be able to tow up to the weight limit that the tow bar can tow.

Volkswagen Touran 2015 Onwards

The second generation of Volkswagen Touran's was launched in 2015, if you have a 2015 Touran it is important you correctly determine which model you have to ensure you get the correct towbar. A quick look at Volkswagen's warranty page confirms that Tourans's produced after 2015 some of the newer models, (2016 on at the time of writing) may still have a manufacturers warranty active.
