Volkswagen Touareg Towbars Towing Specifics
The Touareg was first launched in 2003 is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV, when it comes to towing the Volkswagen Touareg has some real pulling power. Currently, the Volkswagen Touareg is on the third generation, with the latest release being, released in the UK in 2018/19 We will be covering the towing specifics of all three generations below.
Volkswagen Touareg 2003-2010
The first generation of Volkswagen Touareg's was launched in 2003, if you have a 2010 Touareg it is important you correctly determine which model you have to ensure you get the correct towbar. Werecommendthatalltow bars fitted to a Volkswagen Touareg 2003-2010 are fitted with a dedicated electrics kit, this not only helps to ensure all modern features, such as trailer stability, parking sensors function correctly, but also ensures that the vehicles manufacturer’s warranty is not invalidated. A quick look at Volkswagen's warranty page confirms thatTouaregs's produced between 2003 - 2010 will no longer have a manufacturers warranty active,- A 2-year unlimited mileage manufacturers warranty.
- A further 1 year / 60,000 miles (whichever is soonest) warranty.
Bypass Relays
All Volkswagen Touareg 2003-2010 tow bars fit will require a bypass relay, if universal electrics are fitted, this is to ensure that kit does not present faults on the dashboard. A bypass relay helps the universal kit hide from your vehicle ECU and functions so as not to out faults on the dashboard hence the name “BYPASS” A dedicated system works in harmony with your vehicles ECU and all of its functions.Coding
This is the coding of the ECU to accept the dedicated system, this updates your vehicle's software to run smoothly with the new towbar, it works very much like an update to your smartphone. Volkswagen Touareg's vehicles made between 2003-2010 will require coding.Bumper cuts
The tow bar you select will determine whether the cut to the bumper is visible or none visible, for the Touareg's for this year range a bumper cut is required.Nose weight
Nose weight is the amount of weight pushing down on the tow ball, it is important to not exceed the nose weight set on the tow bar, failure to do so could damage the car chassis and/or tow bar mounting points. For the Volkswagen Touareg's manufactured between the years 2003 to 2010 the nose weight is 140kg, nose weights are displayed under each tow bar below.Towing weight
Towing weight is the weight that the Volkswagen Touareg 2003 – 2010 towbars can tow safely, without damaging the vehicle, the is maximum capacity is 3500kg for all the tow bars that fit Volkswagen Touareg 2003 – 2010.
You will need to check the towing limit for your model of Touareg as it may not be able to tow up to the weight limit that the tow bar can tow.
How to identify which Touareg you own, on a change over year.
The first image is the 2003 to 2010 model, the second image is the 2010 - 2018 model, the main differences that can be seen on the rear of the vehicles are
2003 - 2010 has rounded rear lights, exposed exhaust ends, the rear window has a curved edge on the bottom
2010 to 2018 does not have rounded lights, the exhaust ends are covered with integrated aluminium cover, the bottom of edge of the rear window is straight.

How to identify which Touareg you own, on a change over year.
The first image is the 2010 to 2018 model, the second image is the 2018 onwards model, the main differences that can be seen on the rear of the vehicles are
2010 - 2018 models have white strip light on the rear lights
2018 onwards models have a very thin strip of white lights on the rear lights, there is a bumper width light/reflector on the bottom bumper, just above the exhausts.
