Toyota RAV4 Towing Specifications

The Toyota RAV4 is a compact crossover SUV (sports utility vehicle) produced by the Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota. This was the first compact crossover SUV it made its debut in Japan and Europe in 1994, being launched in January 1996. Currently, on the fourth generation, we will cover the towing specifications for all four generations below.

Toyota RAV4 2013 Onwards

Towbar electric kits

We recommend that all tow bars fitted to a Toyota RAV4 2013 Onwards are fitted with a dedicated electrics kit, this not only helps to ensure all modern features, such as trailer stability, parking sensors function correctly, but also ensures that the vehicles manufacturer’s warranty is not invalidated.

A quick look at Toyota's warranty page confirms that Toyota RAV4 produced from 2014 onwards, only cars which are under 5 years old or have less than 100,000 miles on the clock, will have a manufacturers warranty active.
"- 5 years or 100,000* miles from new, whichever comes first, with no mileage limitations for the first year. This warranty also covers any mechanical fault caused by a manufacturing defect. Toyota Warranty information
We do of course offer, Toyota RAV4 universal electrics kits, however as stated these will invalidate any manufacturer warranty you may have.

Bypass Relays

Toyota RAV4's 2013 Onwards will require a bypass relay when universal electrics are fitted. Bypass relays are used to ensure that the kit does not present faults on the dashboard. A bypass relay helps the universal kit hide from your vehicle ECU and functions so as not to put faults on the dashboard hence the name “BYPASS”. A dedicated system works in harmony with your vehicles ECU and all of its functions.

Coding

This is the coding of the ECU to accept the dedicated system, this updates your vehicle's software to run smoothly with the new towbar, it works very much like an update to your smartphone. All Toyota RAV4 will NOT require coding.

Bumper cuts

The only options on Toyota RAV4 2013 Onwards towbars are No Cut, or Visible, a bumper cut is not always required.

Nose weight

Nose weight is the amount of weight pushing down on the tow ball, it is important to not exceed the nose weight set on the tow bar, failure to do so could damage the car chassis and/or tow bar mounting points. For the Toyota RAV4, the maximum capacity nose weight is 80kg, nose weights are displayed under each tow bar below.

Towing weight

Towing weight is the weight that the Toyota RAV4 2013 Onwards towbars can tow safely, without damaging the vehicle, the maximum towing weight capacity is 2225kg, the minimum towing weight capacity is 2000kg.

You will need to check the towing limit for your model of Toyota RAV4 as it may not be able to tow up to the weight limit that the tow bar can tow.


Toyota RAV4 2006-2013 Towing Specifications

RAV4's manufactured in 2006 or 2013? it is important you correctly determine which model you have to ensure you get the correct towbar. You can check this from your logbook, if you own a Toyota RAV4 that falls on a changeover year, please feel free to contact the sales team to discuss your concerns.
