Most drivers dread the thought of having a breakdown, but preparation and prevention are two steps that all drivers can take to make sure when they do breakdown it is as time and cost-efficient as possible.

Here at PF Jones, we are here to help you get from A to B whatever the situation is – which is why we have written this blog about preparing for a breakdown and also some steps you can take to prevent a breakdown happening.

Have a look at our list below!

Preparing for a breakdown

Having a few items in your car at all times will do you the world of good when it comes to a breakdown and makes a massive difference between a 20-minute wait and an hour.

Roadmap

You should always carry a good old-fashioned roadmap in your car, in the instance of a breakdown it will help you work out where you are and where the nearest place for you to get assistance is located. It will also help when calling for assistance to let them know where you are.

Contact Details

If you keep the details of your breakdown service contact and your insurance policy details, this will save you plenty of time and make the process a lot easier than having to worry about that and how you are getting home on top of that.

Toolkit

If you can keep a spare tyre, jack and locking wheel nut in your car could mean you are only off the road for a short time. If you breakdown over your tyre, it will save you a costly repair and a long wait if you have the tools there to fix it yourself! If you don’t have any of the above, you can take a look at our breakdown accessories here.

Spare clothes

It sounds excessive, but if the nearest place for help is a good 15-minute walk away from where you are and you have to walk in unsuitable shoes, it will make the experience all that more stressful and irritating. If you keep a pair of walking trainers or shoes in your car and a jacket (we know what British weather is like) you can walk to assistance without discomfort.

Preventing a breakdown

As much as you can prepare for a breakdown, it will never be an ideal situation. The best way to approach the situation is to put measures in place to prevent it happening at all. Look at some of our prevention tips below!

Servicing

It sounds pretty straightforward, but getting your car regularly serviced will keep your car in check and it will also help detect any issues at the early stages meaning they are easier to resolve, making it less likely to cause disruption and breakdown at a later stage.

Tyre Check

If you are regularly checking your tyres, you will know if anything is wrong and likely to cause an issue at a later point. Check the tyre pressure, tread depth and check for any damage/embedded objects. A regular tyre check can save you from a costly breakdown.

Most drivers worry about a breakdown, but if you follow the steps in this blog you will be as

prepared as possible and therefore the situation should go as smoothly as possible.
