What to do if an accident happens on your caravan holiday

Caravan holidays are great fun, but as with anything an accident can occur at any time. Being prepared and knowing what to do can alleviate a ton of stress during this situation – so we have put together a guide of what to do should you have an accident on a caravan holiday.

At a holiday camp or caravan park, there are multiple factors that could cause an injury or an accident. The most commonly reported incidents include vehicle collision, slip trip and fall accidents, cyclist accidents, faulty/defective equipment or defective hitching mechanisms. All of these can ultimately cause an accident which can result in injury.

If you or a family member is injured in a holiday camp accident, there are specific steps that you must take to ensure you have enough evidence of the incident. This reinforces your claim and helps determine liability. If you are injured at a caravan park, camping ground or campsite must hold a record of everything that happened and the surrounding circumstances.

You must take the following steps:

  • Get medical attention as soon possible, treating your injury is the priority.
  • Report the accident to the site owner/manager - if you cannot do this due to your injury, you must get somebody to do it for you.
  • Get contact details of every person who witnessed the accident.
  • Take photos of the accident scene and your injuries.
  • Get an official medical report of the injuries that were sustained.

Once you have obtained all the following, should you choose to, you will be able to start a personal injury claim. Even if you don’t want to make a claim, we would recommend reporting the accident to your insurer anyway as an “information only” report – this means that if the other party in the accident attempts to make a claim and their insurer contacts yours, you will be notified.

If your motorhome is extremely damaged to the point where you can’t move it yourself, then you should call your breakdown operator to tow it to a repairer.

It’s always good to be prepared should the worst ever happen, so we hope this blog has helped give you some insight on what action to take should you be involved in an accident.
