Your Guide To Caravanning Abroad
Europe offers some incredible Caravanning destinations as well as a chance to immerse yourself in different cultures, try local food and soak up some sun. Many caravanners can be put off taking their caravan abroad due to different driving laws, restrictions and having to drive on the other side of the road. Whilst these factors can seem daunting, you shouldn’t let it prevent you from experiencing views like this from your caravan window.

With the right planning, travelling abroad with your caravan is actually easier than you think. To help, we have compiled our list of top tips in order to help you prepare.
Firstly, here is a checklist of compulsory items and documentation that you will need when going abroad with your caravan.
- Passports (For you and your Family)
- Pet Passport – If you are taking your dog with you, they will need a passport with up to date records of their rabies shots and tapeworm treatment.
- Your Driving Licence.
- Proof of Vehicle Ownership (V5C Document)
- Proof of MOT
- Proof of Insurance.
- High Visibility Waist Coats (Legal Requirement in France).
- Spare Wheel (Can be difficult to find UK Tyre Sizes in Europe)
- GB Sticker for Caravan and Car.
- Headlamp Adjustments/Converters
- Warning Triangle
Depending on where you are travelling, you may also be required to bring a first aid kit, a fire extinguisher and a personal breathalyser kit. Research the country you are going to find out their compulsory driving items. Failure to have them could result in a fine.
Before setting off, we would also recommend:
- Checking Your Car & Caravan Insurance – Be sure that your insurance covers you for international travel. Some insurance policies may not cover you for any accidents abroad. If your insurance policy does not cover you, consider upgrading your policy.
- Research Traffic Signs – Each country has its own traffic signs and signals. Be sure to research different signs for the country you are visiting to ensure you know what each sign means.
- Research Regulations – Each country will also have its own set of traffic laws and regulations. For example, in Spain, if you are under the age of 18, you cannot drive, even if you are 17 and hold a full UK license. Make sure you are familiar with the countries rules and regulations before visiting.
- Towing Weight – Before choosing a certain country as your destination, make sure you have researched the towing weight laws. In France, motorists with a standard driving license are only allowed to tow a trailer with a maximum mass of 750kg.
Once you know all the correct rules and regulations and have the compulsory documentation, travelling abroad with your caravan will be easy!
