Volkswagen Arteon

In 2019, this car was crowned the overall winner of ‘The Tow Car Awards’. The voting board declared this car as “roomy, good to drive and great to tow with.” 

The maximum towing weight is 2000kg, with a kerb weight of 1643kg.  

 The car can withstand crosswind, reach high speeds and is capable of emergency manoeuvres. It has a 2.0-litre diesel engine, which can comfortably tow a suitably matched caravan up to speed. 

 Land Rover Discovery 

This may be considered one of the more obvious choices. It is large with seven-seat usability, making it a great choice for caravan holidays with all the family. 

It is an excellent car to tow with. The new Discovery is lighter than the older model, but it can still tow a maximum weight of 3500kg. It has a tow ball limit of 196kg and kerb weight 2298kg.  

With a 2.7-litre diesel engine, this powerful vehicle is one of the higher ends in our top five. 

Vauxhall Insignia  

Another great family car, the Vauxhall Insignia is comfortable, spacious and comes with some great interior gadgets to keep the family entertained on long journeys.  

The car has a towing capacity of up to 1,600kg and 1,360kg kerb weight which is the lowest out of the five cars so far. 

Ford Ranger 

The Ford Ranger can tow 3,500kg with a gross train weight of 6,000kg, which is very useful if you plan to go caravanning a lot and require a large amount of storage.  

They are particularly designed to carry heavy loads and to tow large items. You can choose from a 2.2-litre or a 3.2-litre diesel engine and they both come with a six-speed manual or six-speed gearbox.  

Vauxhall Insignia Sports Tourer 

If you want to prioritise everyday driving but still want a car that is great for towing and 

an impressive load-hauler, then you should consider the Vauxhall Insignia Sports Tourer.  

Its kerb weight is larger than the Vauxhall insignia at 1633kg with a legal towing limit of 1950kg.   

Suzuki Jimny  

If you’re after a ‘boy toy’ that has impressive style and is great for trips whether alone or as a couple, then you should consider the latest Suzuki Jimny.  

Its maximum braked towing capacity is 1,300kg with a 1.5-litre petrol engine. You also have the choice between a manual or an automatic gearbox.
