Does eco mode affect towing
As many cars now have eco-mode, it’s becoming more and more of a common question as to whether eco mode affects your vehicle when towing or not. Today we’re going to look at exactly that…
Eco mode was designed to help improve fuel efficiency for drivers. When eco mode is on, the engine and CVT controls change which then makes it easier for the car to run on lower fuel consumption.
When you are towing a caravan, this adds extra weight to your car which will negatively impact your fuel economy, which is why many caravanners wonder if eco mode can make a difference.
If you are towing on an inclined road, we would suggest keeping eco mode off – the last thing you want is failing a hill start! A general rule of thumb is using eco mode when you are on a flat, open stretch road.
If your car’s eco mode setting affects the alternator, you will want to make sure this does not interfere with your caravan’s electrics.
Of course, this is all dependent on both the model vehicle you have and also the tow bar you have installed. The best practice is to check the Towing or Driving modes sections of your vehicle handbook to see what the advice regarding eco mode is, but generally, you should only use it for flat and open terrains.
Also, when fitting a tow bar, check to make sure the electrics will not interfere with your cars eco mode.
If you aren’t sure, you can visit one of our many fitting centres across the UK where you can either have your tow bar fitted or you can be advised by one of our professional fitters whether it will interfere with your car electrics or not.
